Summer memories: Fact or Fiction

If you’ve lived in the Midwest most of your life, as I have, you expect several weeks to feel like a slow roasting furnace. You can deal with the discomfort mindful that fall is right around the corner.

I’ve always enjoyed the change of seasons. But these days, with temps soaring at 100-plus, September may not be much better than August. Would October be much better? The good months seem shorter, the oppressive ones longer,

Memories of what summers once were have faded to the point of making me wonder if they really were that great. Did I really enjoy going to water parks, outdoor concerts, barbecues, Fourth of July fireworks, vacation getaways to exotic destinations? What did I consider exotic?

It could be things have changed so much since the last time I boarded an airplane, a flight today might be cancelled before I get to the airport. I may need to take out a loan to drive farther than a few hundred miles.

If I go out to something that lasts more than a couple of hours in these dangerous climes, I might need Life Alert to get vertical again.

Maybe a faded memory is a good thing. I can’t dwell on what I can’t remember, right?
